CESS Nuffield, Oxford

Python and R Programmer

We are looking for one programmer to join our team at the Nuffield Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS). The programmer will be working on a Fell Fund funded project entitled “A Global Perspective on Financial Literacy.” The project will be focused on large-scale experimental interventions conducted on different social media platforms (e.g., Reddit, Twitter and Facebook). The work will be compensated based on the hours work at the rate of £20-£35/hour, commensurate with experience. The position will be for a fixed term of six months with the possibility of extension conditional on funding,

The programmer should be able to analyze large corpora of hierarchical text using text as data techniques such as dictionary methods, clustering and structural topic modeling. The programmer will also engage in large-scale social media scraping using APIs and specific Python packages such as PRAW.

A successful candidate will possess at the following skills and experience:

  • Strong Python programming experience
  • Extensive experience in quantitative text analysis and machine learning using R
  • Ability to run data analysis with large datasets (up to one terabyte)
  • Excellent organisational skills and timekeeping
  • Ability to communicate successfully and work effectively with other team members

Other desirable qualities include:

  • Experience with Django
  • Experience learning to work with new frameworks and APIs
  • Database development and application experience (SQL, PHP).

Casual Research Assistants

The Nuffield Centre for Experimental Social Sciences in Oxford is looking for Casual Research Assistants to join their team. The successful candidate will be working 5-10 hours per week, earning an hourly salary of £14.

As a part-time Research Assistant you will be required to, organise, maintain and update our datasets. 
Your responsibilities will be:

  • Processing, consolidating, and transforming data sets within and between datasets.
  • Carrying out statistical analyses using standard methods and more advanced techniques.
  • Ensuring that all tasks relating to data collection and storage are carried out according to the relevant guidelines and regulations for each funder and in line with CESS policies.

The skills required for this job are:

  • Being able to interpret and analyse data.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of Stata, R, and z-tree.
  • IT literate with knowledge of Office Software (Word and Excel).

Research Output Assistant

We are searching for one Research Output Assistant to join our team at the Nuffield Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS). The Assistant’s primary role will be to help CESS researchers in the writing up of academic papers, based on already-existing datasets. The work will be compensated on a per-paper-written basis, at a rate of 1,500 USD (with a 1,000 USD publication bonus).

CESS has recently conducted laboratory, field, laboratory-in-field, and online experiments that have produced several unique and interesting datasets. The Assistant will work closely with CESS researchers (economists, political scientists and psychologists) to review the academic literature, conduct data analysis, and write up academic papers using these datasets. The Assistant will have the possibility of being included as co-author of such papers, if he/she makes a significant intellectual contribution to them. The Assistant will also have the opportunity to – and is encouraged to – propose additional academic papers from the existing datasets.

A successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills.

  • Recent MA or PhD degree in Economics or Political Science
  • Strong data-analytical skills (experience with Stata or R is highly desirable)
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and timekeeping
  • Ability to communicate successfully and work effectively with other team members

CESS Nuffield, China

Experimental Scientist

The Nuffield College Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS) seeks to appoint an Experimental Scientist contractor based in CESS China at Nankai University, Tianjin, China. CESS China has two fully networked computer labs that are used by a wide range of social scientists to run experiments for research in diverse social science disciplines. CESS China also works with the CESS Online operation to offer interactive large-scale experiments implemented with subjects from the CESS China subject pool, on a WeChat app platform.

The Experimental Scientist will be part of the CESS network of experimental scientists who are located in Oxford, Santiago in Chile, Pune in India, and Tianjin in China, and she or he will work closely with the CESS worldwide team. Duties include assisting with the development of the CESS Online platforms, developing online and lab subject pools, advising and assisting researchers in programming experiments, and promoting CESS China and experimental social sciences in China. This opportunity would be ideal for individuals with a strong technical background trained in computer science or experimental programming and data analysis. A familiarity with experimental methods is desirable although not necessary.

Candidates should hold a Master’s (or higher) degree in Computer Science or in a related applied field.

The Experimental Scientist will have fluent spoken and written English and excellent spoken and written Chinese. She or he will have experience of programming experiments in z-Tree and oTree (Python), and in at least one other programming language, such as JavaScript. The Experimental Scientist will be familiar with software designed for recruiting and managing subject pool databases, including customized software such as ORSEE or HROOT, and will have experience of working with SQL or MongoDB databases, and with social media mobile applications such as WeChat. She or he will possess a good knowledge of networks, servers, and clients; excellent oral and written communication skills; and will be able to demonstrate excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Experience of conducting social science lab experiments; of working with basic web technologies, such as HTML and CSS, as well as more complex technologies such as PHP; and of using statistical analysis software (such as R and Stata) would be an advantage.

The Experimental Scientist will be contracted to work for 110 hours per month (minimum 25 hours per week), at a rate of £15.00 per hour. The contract is available from 1 April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter and is fixed-term for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.
